Finnish anti-immigration party MP claims homosexuality to be a “disability in sexual development”

Posted on August 1, 2012 by Migrant Tales

In light of the municipal elections of October 28 and the Perussuomalaliset (PS) party’s poll standings, it’s no surprise that MPs of the right-wing populist party like James Hirvisaari are leading the charge against different minorities in Finland. In a comment on Hommaforum, the PS MP considered homosexuality to be “a disability in sexual development.”*

Hommaforum is an unofficial PS website used to spread intolerance of minorities in Finland.

Of the Counter Jihadists in parliament, Hirvisaari is in the same league with other Suomen Sisu association fellow members like Jussi Halla-aho, Olli Immonen and others.

“In my opinion there is a good reason to ask if homosexuality is some sort of disability in sexual development if a person cannot develop in the natural order [being able to reproduce] of things,” he is quoted as saying on Hommaforum. “It’s not [homosexuality] a sickness but only a disability.”

Hirvisaari, who got fined for hate speech in December, is a good example of the negative passions and political forces that social media has unleashed in this country.

The decision by the Kouvola Court of Appeal to fine Hirvisaari for hate speech was upheld in June by the Finnish Supreme Court.

The PS MP’s near-constant rants against different minorities are a wake-up call for us on how some politicians like Hirvisaari are breathing life back into intolerance and polarizing our society.

There is a clear connection between xenophobic and homophobic behavior. In order to promote tolerance in a society, we must challenge both of these social ills.

Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen expressed such concern recently on YLE. He said that the actions and comments of parties like the PS have hurt Finland’s international image.

”What is clearly causing harm [to our society these days] is the racist, near-fascist, xenophobic old way of thinking that is propagated by certain sectors…” he said.

*Taking into context what James Hirvisaari said, and trying to understand it, probably “disability in sexual development” is a better translation of kehitysvamma in this context than sexual disorder.

Right, Marco, it’s pro-immigration and pro-cultural diversity. NOT.

PS is only against immigration when we’re talking about Africans and Moslims arabs, other than that yeah maybe they are pro immigrant as you would say.

I do not know what that is supposed to mean but PS as all other parties acknowledge the fact that Finland will need foreign labour within some years

The PS wants “super immigrants” that fit their narrow-minded view of the world. It’s a bit like Cinderella waiting for Prince Charming.

Couple of note from HS.fi about this case that Enrique so conviniently decided to ignore:

“Hirvisaari kirjoitti maanantaina myös, ettei homous tai vammaisuus hävitä ihmisarvoa, eikä yhteiskunnan kuulu tuomita homoja tai vammaisia.”

To me your enrage about this and Finland’s reputation feels rather amusing. People like you go on exagarating and intentionally misunderstanding them to abroad and then coming to tell how they tarnish the finnish reputation. Very rich.

If somali does a crime and a tabloid makes a news about it. It is prejudice against somalis and racist thing to do right? Your enrage goes against the tabloid, not the one committing the crime. When PS politician says something and some people makes big news, even intentionally misunderstand what was meant, the fault goes to PS ofcourse.

I wouldnt trust Enrique to make news about PS as it is his agenda to make them look bad.

Yossie, we are experts at PS double-talk. We have to cut through the you-know-what and rescue what Hirvisaari is really saying and what he is implying. It’s a bit like saying “I am in favor of women’s rights but I don’t know if women are ready for it.”

      Get it?

Can I claim too to be a self proclaimed expert in muslim double-talk? Like how they say they want live according to our laws but in sweden it was proven in many mosques they advice against reporting domestic violence and going to police for it.

Ofcourse in case of Hirvisaari you could highlight that he too accepts the homosexuals and give less light to his opinions about whether its disorder or not. Would this increases tolerance rather than saying PS are homophopic and everyone else who voted them must be too!

And I figured how your moderation works. Better not mention a certain minorty from east africe. Gets you stuck in moderation.

“Super” immigrants are something that rests in between your ears; it’s like the fairy tale about Cinderella waiting for Prince Charming. The PS wants these types of immigrants to inhabit Impivaara, or their imaginary 100% self-sufficient society based on racism, near-fascism and xenophobia.

Like Cinderella, super immigrants are a fairy tale.

“Hirvisaari kirjoitti maanantaina myös, ettei homous tai vammaisuus hävitä ihmisarvoa, eikä yhteiskunnan kuulu tuomita homoja tai vammaisia.”

Nice that he suggested that gays should have dignity, after the fact that he has taken it upon himself to define the ‘norms’ of sexual behaviour in such a way as to turn their sexuality into ‘deviance’ or ‘disability’. Fucking rich, to be honest. Arsehole!

Just to be crude here for a second – a cock was never made to go into a mouth, does that mean that all oral sex should be banned because it’s not ‘natural’?

If men playing with cocks is not natural, then men should not play with their own cocks, so masturbation is also off the table. I mean, playing with my cock, your cock, what’s the difference?

Sexuality is not a one-dimensional function – i.e. reproduction. It can lead to reproduction, but it also leads to pleasure, which ironically, in evolutionary terms, is one reason it’s so popular among mammals. In humans, there is so much pleasure and so unrelated to reproduction that sex can realistically be referred to as ‘recreational’. As it’s perfectly possible for same sex couples to pleasure each other through sexual play, then there really is no reason at all to not refer to this as ‘natural’, as sexual pleasure is very much a ‘biological reality’¨.

As usual in these fascist considerations, the true multi-dimensional realities of life, culture and nature are reduced to absurdly narrow categories, and moral labels of ‘acceptance’ are placed upon them.

Hirvisaari has a right to his opinions, but no way should he or others like him have the right to act on those opinions in such a way as to water down the rights of individuals based on their sexuality. It’s pretty clear he would seek to do so.

It is indeed good question like you demonstrated. Can there really be something as normal sex and if so, what is included?

On other hand one can argue that since gay couples are unable to reproduce without external help, it could be called “disability”.

All that is ofcourse semantics and the bottom line in any case is what he did say:

ettei homous tai vammaisuus hävitä ihmisarvoa, eikä yhteiskunnan kuulu tuomita homoja tai vammaisia

I find it intruguing that even after Hirvisaari said that, you claim he is watering down rights of individuals.

Well, claiming they should have dignity doesn’t wash when he’s already aired his own normative views in such a way as to label their sexuality a disability. Are gay rights to be referred to as ‘disability rights’?

The guy is an idiot that doesn’t understand the first thing about sexuality, and treats his own norm as the rule for judging everything else, without any real thought to what he actually means by ‘natural’. This isn’t just ignorance though, in this day and age, and not from a politician. It’s bloody insulting and completely unacceptable.

Not surprised to see you defending this kind of base ignorance.

In my opinion there is good arguments why its not a disability and then again, there is good arguments why it might be called disability. So in a sense it would make a good subject of semantic debate.

When it comes to hirvisaari, he is free to have his opinion. In the end you are ofcourse right that bondering over such matters (especially when you are a politician) is not good idea since people like you go emotionally over it.

What I personally find detaistlful is how Enrique once again uses this for his persubashing by cherrypicking what he said and ignoring the tolerant parts just to make PS worse than it is.

Yossie, do YOU understand what Hirvisaari’s logic is? I doubt that he doesn’t either. In an interview with HS, which we posted, Hirvisaari tries to give a more “tolerant” view of homosexuality. But, come on… this guy was fined for hate speech and his racist rants are well-known.
