Yellow Foot mushrooms anyone?

by , under All categories, Enrique

I went mushroom picking Saturday just outside of Mikkeli in eastern Finland. I ran into some really good mushrooms like the Yellow Foot (Cantharellus lutescens). It belongs to the same family like the tasty Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius) and Horn of Plenty (Craterellus cornucopioides).

While most mushrooms die when there’s frost, the Yellow Foot is very resistant. It disappears when it gets buried under snow.

These mushrooms are not like the deadly Destroying Angel (Amanita virosa).

Two pictures of the Yellow Foot mushroom. Don’t pick wild mushrooms
based on pictures. Go with a person who has picked them before so you’ll
learn to recognize them in the wild.

Yellow Foots grow in groups.

enrique – these are beautiful photos, that low ground-cover in the bottom picture makes a most rich, gorgeous pattern, and the mushrooms seem as if bobbing on a textured sea of green. i hope you had a good feast of these! G

The last time I ate them my hands turned yellow. I couldn’t look at my feet for fear the hardy mushroom would turn me into an athletic fungus .
You can tell I love mushrooms.
I was in Mikkeli town, “The Parnell” toasting the man – Charles Stewart- himself , lamented his downfall by the catholic church. Well, you have to raise your glass to something, so it may as well be the place you’re sittin’ in.
I met up later with the James & Younger gang to a bit of middle class bushwhacking out by Tupala.

Savannah, many thanks for your kind comments. The woods of the sub-arctic are one fringe benefit of living in such northerly latitudes. Even if I say that I pick mushrooms, what I enjoy most is being by myself in the forest. There you can find momentary peace from this mad place we call the world.
Hi G, great to hear from you as well. We fried the Yellow Foot mushrooms and there still in the fridge. I’m certain you must do some mushrooming picking where you live.
Did the both of you know that my friend Paddy lives in the same city as I. He’s a very kind person and I like his writing a lot.
If I had to choose from a list, the three of you are some of my favorite blogs on the web.
    Thank you!
    Enrique
